How To Fix Dishwasher That Won’t Clean Properly

repairman repairing dishwasherWith the advent of dishwasher, cleaning dishes has become easier and less time-consuming. Earlier, we would have to spend several hours cleaning the dirty dishes. Today, all we have to do is put our dishes in the dish washer and let the house appliance do its job. Within a short period, the dishwasher has become an indispensable part of our home. However, like any other residential appliance, even the dishwasher can develop a problem. When your dishwasher malfunctions, it is best to opt for home repairs for dishwasher. You can find details of a dishwasher technician in your area and call them to troubleshoot the problem with your household appliance. The dishwasher service technician will visit your place to repair or service the machine. If you plan to attempt the dishwasher repair yourself, make sure you are aware of the parts that could be responsible for the problem.

At times, your dishwasher may not clean the dishes properly. If you plan to repair the machine without the help of a dishwasher repairman, you should know which part could be responsible for the problem. Here is a brief guide to help you.

Discharge Housing Gasket

If the water pressure from the machine’s spray arm is low, the housing gasket of the upper discharge could be responsible for the problem. The gasket is usually located on the discharge cover just above the impeller. The housing gasket may have got dislocated or may need replacement. If the gasket is damaged and must be replaced, make sure you remove all the debris from the area before installing the new gasket.

Spray Arm

A problem with the machine’s lower spray arm could prevent the home appliance from cleaning the dishes properly. The spray arm is responsible for spraying strong stem of detergent and hot water on the dishes. Before you check the condition of the spray arm, make sure it is able to move freely and is not obstructed by the dirty dishes. At times, the bearing ring of the spray arm may be dislocated or worn out, which can cause the arm to wobble and prevent it spraying water and detergent evenly. If the bearing ring is not worn out or dislocated, you should visually inspect the spray arm for plugged holes or cracks. Food particles, glass, toothpicks, and other debris can clog the holes of the spray, which can impair the direction or force of the spray arm. If there are cracks on the spray arm, it will reduce water force and prevent the machine from cleaning the dishes properly.

Docking Station

Some dishwashers have a middle spray arm which is attached to the machine’s upper rack. In these machines, you must check the docking station and its flappers. The docking station, which has two outlets, provides water to the machine’s middle spray arm. Make sure the docking station is connected properly to the tube that supplies water to the machine. Also, make sure the flappers move freely and close securely to prevent pressure loss when the supply tube of middle spray arm is not inserted.

Chopper

repairman fixing dishwasherThe dishwasher is equipped with a food chopper that is responsible for chopping the leftover food particles into small pieces so that they can be easily drained out from the washer. If the chopper isn’t fine enough or is broken, it can clog the drains. When your washer is not cleaning the dishes properly, you should check the drains. If the drain is clogged by large food particles, you must the check the condition of the chopper.

Water Inlet Valve

A part of the dishwasher that is most likely to fail and prevent the machine from cleaning the dishes properly is the water inlet valve. The valve is located near the lower access panel which is usually in the front of the machine. If water level is not maintained or the machine does not have water, you must first inspect the valve to ensure that power is supplied to the valve when water enters the machine. You can check this using the multi-meter. If there is no problem with the power supply, the valve must be replaced.

Water Delivery Tube

In machines that have upper spray arm, a problem in water delivery tube can prevent the washer from cleaning the dishes properly. The tube is usually made of plastic and it is responsible for supplying water to the upper spray arm. When checking the condition of the tube, make sure it is properly aligned with spray arm and there are no obstructions.

Filters

Most dishwashers are equipped with at least one filter to remove debris from machine during the wash cycle. These filters come with a self-cleaning feature but under detergent use or certain water conditions, it can become clogged. The filter is usually a part of the pump or wash arm assembly. If you suspect that the filter is not doing its job, you should clean the filter. If cleaning does not help, you may have to replace the filter.

Wash Spinner

The wash spinner is a wash arm that is usually on the manifold or on the water feed tube. If the spinner is dislocated or cracked, it could prevent the machine from cleaning the dishes properly.

Detergent Dispenser

water wont drainA problem with the detergent dispenser could prevent the washer from cleaning the dishes. Ideally, you must use a good quality detergent to wash the dishes. If you use tablets or gel, try switching to powered detergent because it dissolves faster. Some machines have a pre-wash compartment in their detergent cup. You could use this to add detergent to the machine. Also, it is important to use a detergent that suits the local water conditions. For instance, if you use hard water to clean the dishes, you will need more detergent to clean the dishes. However, avoid using too much detergent because it could damage the glassware.

The detergent dispenser may not be working properly because the dispenser cup could be caked or clogged with the old detergent. To troubleshoot this problem, all you have to do is clean the cup. Also, make sure detergent is released by the detergent cup during the wash cycle.

Heating Element

For the washer to clean the dishes properly, a temperature of about 142 degrees Fahrenheit must be maintained. The heating element is used by the washer to maintain the temperature of water inside the machine. It is important to note that when you select the normal wash cycle, the heating element does not play any role in heating the water. So, when you select the normal cycle, make sure the water is hot enough to clean the dishes. Avoid using very hot water to clean the dishes, as it could damage the dishes. Before you start the wash cycle, run the hot water in the sink for 5 to 10 minutes. If the temperature of water drops during the cycle, the heating element could be the culprit. Since the heating element cannot be repaired, you may have to get a replacement.

Pump Impellers

The dishwasher has two impellers – the drain impeller and the wash impeller. These impellers are located inside the dishwasher. The wash impeller is responsible for circulating water inside the machine and pressurizes the water spray arm. The drain impeller is used to drain from the machine. To check the condition of the impellers, you can visually inspect them. If the fins or hub is damaged, you may have to replace it.

How to Fix A Washer That’s Timer Won’t Advance

onsite_washer_repair_service_technicianNot all home appliances are equally useful. We use some residential appliances almost every day, while we use other others occasionally. Appliances such as dishwasher, refrigerator, and washer, are some appliances that we use regularly. Any problem with these appliances can upset our daily routine. For instance, if your washer stops working, you may have to wash a pile of dirty clothes by hand, which is a tiring and time-consuming process. To troubleshoot the problem with your machine, it is best to get help from a repairman who is qualified and experienced in doing washing machine repair. If you feel that there is no major problem with your machine and you don’t require the services of a washer technician, you can try the washer repair yourself. However, make sure you take every possible precaution before you start working on your household appliance.

One of the problems you are likely to encounter when using the washer is the timer not advancing. If you plan to troubleshoot the problem yourself, you should check the parts that could be responsible for this problem and repair or replace the damaged part. Some parts that can be responsible for this problem are:

Lid Switch

Most top loaders come with a safety feature known as the lid switch. This switch is usually located below the top lid of the washer. The switch has a pin or projection attached to it which activates the switch when the lid is closed. The switch supplies power to the motor circuits and the timer. Check if the lid switch is activated when the lid is closed. You must also visually inspect the condition of the actuators and levers and make sure they are not sticking or damaged. If the lid switch is activated but there is no power supply to the circuits and the motor, it means that the switch is damaged and must be replaced. To replace the switch, disconnect the power supply to the machine and remove all the wires that are connected to the switch. Once you remove the switch from the machine, check its condition using a multi-meter. Many people avoid replacing the lid switch that is broken or damaged. You should not do this as it is an important safety feature of the washer and can result in serious injury. Get help with this issue from qualified appliance repair professionals.

Timer Motor

Several functions of the washer are controlled by the timer. The timer has several electrical contacts that are operated by a motor or assembly. Some timer contacts control the functions of the timer motor. If the timer of the machine does not advance, it could be due to a problem with the motor or the timer itself. You can check the condition of the timer using a multi-meter. To do this you must have some knowledge of electrical schematics to determine the correct checks. If the timer is working properly, you must check the continuity of the time motor. If there is a problem with the timer motor, you may have to replace the timer assembly, as timer motor may not be available separately.

Water Level Controller

The controller is responsible for controlling the water valve of the washer. When the desired water level is reached, the controller turns off the valve which prevents water from overflowing. If the desired water level is reached but the machine timer does not advance, it may be due to a defective switch that controls the water level. You will need a multi-meter to check the condition of the switch. Before checking the condition of the water level switch, make sure you disconnect the power supply to the machine. Once you disconnect the power supply, remove all the wires that are connected to the switch. Now check the condition of each contact using a schematic diagram.

fridge repairman showing thumbs up signTimer Knob

The knob is attached to the machine’s timer shaft. This knob will turn as the timer advances through the wash cycle. The knob can also be used to activate the wash cycle by pulling out on a lever that activates the timer switch. This plastic knob has a metal insert that is attached to the timer shaft. Normal use of the washer can wear out the knob and prevent it from turning with the timer shaft. When the knob is damaged, it will be difficult for the timer to run to the desired wash cycle. Also, it will prevent the dial from turning with the shaft as the wash cycle advances.

If you plan to replace the faulty dial or knob, make sure you remove the power supply to the house appliance. If power supply is not disconnected, you may inadvertently start the washer which can be a serious health hazard. To remove the timer knob from the machine, you may have to move it in and rotate it in an anti-clockwise direction. Some knobs are covered by cap and have a retaining clip that connects it to the dial. In these machines, you have to remove the cap and the retaining clip to remove the knob from the machine.

Drain Pump

The pump is responsible for removing the water from the tub at the end of the rinse and wash cycle. If there is a problem with the drain pump, the water will not drain from the tub and the washer will not advance to the next portion of the cycle. If you face this problem, you must check the condition of the drain pump. Some electronic washers display a fault code when the water does not drain from the tub. You can use this fault code to identify the exact cause of the problem.

Water inlet Valve

During the fill portion of the wash cycle, the inlet valve supplies both hot and cold water to the washer. The valve has two solenoids that are responsible for opening and closing the valve. If there is a problem during the spin cycle or if the machine stalls during the fill portion of wash or rinse cycle, it could be due to the faulty inlet valve. Before you check the condition of the inlet valve, make sure the inlet hose is not blocked or kinked. Also, make sure the inlet screen is clean. If there is no problem with the hose and screens, you can check the continuity of the solenoids using a multi-meter. This check must be done after you disconnect the power supply to the machine. If the solenoids test out OK, you must check the power supply to the solenoids. This washer service requires a live voltage check which should be performed by a trained appliance service technician. If there is no power supply to the solenoids, you must check the components of water level switch, time, lid and cycle selector switch.

How to Fix A Washer That Shakes and Moves

She takes the laundry out of the dryer. When a house appliance is broken, it can disturb your normal routine. At times, the residential appliance may move or vibrate, which can make it difficult for you to use the appliance. For instance, you may not be able to wash your clothes when the washing machine moves or vibrates. You could get help of a washer technician to troubleshoot the problem. Alternatively, you could try to repair or service the household appliance without any professional help. Here are the steps you could take to identify and troubleshoot the problem with the washer.

Shock Absorber

Most front-loading washers have shock absorbers that reduce the machine movement during the spin cycle. These shock absorbers are usually attached to the tub and the base frame of the machine. To assess the condition of this part, you must remove the rear or front panel of the machine. If you notice that the shock absorbers are damaged or broken, you must replace them immediately. If you don’t have the tools to replace the shocks, you can get help from a washer repairman.

When the shock absorbers are damaged, they will unbalance the loads and cause the washer to move or shake. The home appliance will make loud banging sound when the washtub rotates. If steps are not taken to troubleshoot the problem, it can damage other components.

onsite_appliance_washer_technician

Tub and Suspension Spring

Suspension springs of the washer are used either to stabilize the washer tub assembly to the base or to suspend the tub from the washer cabinet. These suspensions also absorb the vibrations of the washtub when the tub spins. When these springs are damaged, you can hear excessive noise from the home appliance during the spin cycle. To assess the condition of the suspension springs, you must remove the front or top outer panel of the washer. Visually inspect the springs and replace them, if necessary.

Snubber Ring

Some washers have a snubber ring that reduces vibration during the spin cycle. The ring is usually located at the bottom of the washer and it provides cushion to the tub support assembly and the washer base. When the ring wears out, it allows the washtub to move excessively, which can cause the washer to shake uncontrollably. To visually inspect the ring, you must remove the front panel. If you notice white dust on or near the ring, it indicates that the ring is worn out and must be replaced. To replace the ring, you must first remove the tub
springs.

Tub Dampening Strap

Some washers have straps that reduce vibration during the spin cycle. The straps are attached to the corner of the cabinet and top of the washtub. The straps are made of soft rubber that can wear out due to regular use. When the strap is worn out, the washtub can come in contact with the cabinet, which can cause the machine to shake. This can create loud banging sound. If the straps are damaged, you must replace all the straps at the same time. Changing the straps may not be easy, and it is in your interest to get help from a washer service
technician.

How to Fix An Oven Timer That’s Not Advancing

man thinking of oven issuesHaving a range or oven in the kitchen can help in reducing the time you spend in the kitchen. When the household appliance malfunctions, most people prefer getting help from an oven service technician. Repairing the range or stove can appear to be a big task, but if you know where to look, you can easily repair the machine. If your timer of the oven does not advance, the electronic board of the home appliance is likely to be the cause of the problem.

The electronic control board controls almost all the functions of the oven. The control board operates both the broil and bake element of the appliance. If fault codes are not displayed, you should check for power supply to the elements. When there is no power supply to the elements, you should check the power at the appropriate relays on the control board. Since this is a live voltage check, it should be done by a professional oven repairman. If there is no power output from the relay, you should change the control board.

How To Fix A Dryer That Won’t Start?

Clothes and towels in the dryer. When your home dryer does not start, repairing it may seem like a daunting task, but fixing the dryer is not very difficult. The most difficult part of this repair is identifying the problem part. If you don’t want to call a dryer repairman, we have made a list of parts that are most likely to cause this problem. You can use this list to diagnose the problem and take all possible steps to rectify it. Some of the parts that are likely to cause this problem include:

Door Switch

The door switch allows the household machine to tumble, only when the door is closed. If your house dryer does not start when you close the door, it indicates that the door switch may be damaged. The switch of the dryer is usually located behind the front panel with switch button protruding into the opening. You can check the continuity of the switch using a multi-tester. Most door switches come with more than one terminal, so make sure you check all terminals carefully. You must do the check between the terminals marked “NO” and “C”. The readings of the test should read “0” when the button is depressed or when the door is closed.

Thermal Fuse

This part is found in some dryers to prevent it from overheating. The thermal fuse is a heat sensitive fuse that will only operate when the temperature inside the machine becomes too hot. When the temperature is too hot, it will cut the power supply to the machine which can cause the dryer to become inoperable. The fuse is about an inch long and is normally embedded in the plastic housing of the machine. Some brands of dryers come with more the one fuse. The additional thermal fuse is normally located on the blower housing or heating element housing of electric dryer or the burner housing of the gas dryer. To check the fuse, disconnect the power supply to the machine.

Push or Rotary Switch

The start switch of the dryer is usually located in the main console. When the switch is depressed, it sends power to the drive motor, which starts the dryer. If the dryer does not work when you start the switch, it indicates that the switch may be defective. Just like your dryer service technician, you can check the continuity of the switch using a multi-meter. Before checking the continuity, disconnect the power supply to the machine.

Drive Motor

Small bright green laundry room inter with washer and dryer. Most electric and gas dryers have a motor that turns the dryer drum and blower. When there is a problem with the drive motor, the dryer may not start. It may also produce a humming sound, which indicates that switch or winding of the motor is bad. To check the condition of the motor, you must remove the front panel and the drum. You will require supply line voltage to the terminals on the motor to check if it is defective. Since live voltage tests are dangerous, they must be performed by qualified dryer technician.

Main Control Board

Electronic dryers use a circuit board to operate the electric components of the machine. The circuit board is usually located in the main control panel of the dryer. If your machine does not start, this part could be the potential cause of the problem. Some of the symptoms of board problem include burn marks on the circuit board or on any other part that is connected to the board. If the board is defective, it cannot be repaired and must be replaced immediately.

Timer

The timer of the dryer is located in the control console. It consists of a small motor that is connected to several gears that rotate cams. These cams turn electric contacts off and on inside the timer. The machine timer contacts the electric flow to the dryer motor, heat circuit, and the timer motor itself. When the timer is defective, it prevents the power from reaching the drive motor. You can check the continuity of the timer using a multi-meter. This test must be performed only after the power supply is removed from the motor. If the timer is faulty, a repair is no longer necessary because it needs to be replaced immediately.

Terminal Block

She takes the laundry out of the dryer. If the circuit breaker of the dryer is tripping, this is an indication of a problem in the terminal block. The internal wires of the machine are connected to the power cord by the terminal. When there is a loose connection at the terminal block, it can overheat and fail. In extreme cases, it can lead to fire breakout. You must disconnect the power supply to the machine before accessing the condition of the terminal block. If the terminals are overheating, you must replace the terminal block and damaged wires must be repaired or replaced as well. For complicated dryer repair, contact a professional residential technician to do the repair service for you.
