How To Replace A Dishwasher Pump

The dishwasher is a household appliance that you will find in most homes. This useful appliance eliminates the trouble of cleaning the dirty dishes by hand. A dishwasher cleans the dishes with detergent and fresh water and it then pumps out the dirty water and food waste into the sink or garbage disposal. Some of the tools you will need to troubleshoot the problem are voltage tester, screwdriver, towel, and adjustable pliers.

The Process

1. Turn off the power supply to the machine. Also, disconnect the water supply by
   turning off the supply valve. You can find this valve in the sink cabinet near the dishwasher.
2. Open the machine main door to remove the washer arm and the dish rack. The washer arm is usually retained by a screw. At times, these screws are reverse threaded, which means that you can loosen it by turning it clockwise.
3. After removing the washer arm and dish rack, you must remove the machine’s lower access panel. This panel is attached to the machine by several Phillips-head

1. Use ordinary tester to check whether the wires that are connected to the motor are live. If the tester lights up, the wires are live and you have not disconnected the power supply to the machine. You must also check the copper winding of the motor for live current before carrying out repairs. The winding could retain electricity for a few minutes even after the power supply to the machine is cut.
2. Put the towel below the pump outlet hose. Remove the spring-loaded clamp from the hose using the adjustable pliers. Pull out the hose from the discharge outlet. When the hose is removed, some water could drop out onto the towel.
3. Unsnap the tabs that retain the motor assembly. These tabs usually hold the motor to the bottom of the machine.
4. Open the machine door to remove the pump assembly.
5. Disconnect and remove the machine pump from the dishwasher motor assembly. Some pumps are connected to the assembly using a locking tab while others must be twisted out of the pump assembly.
6. Fix the new pump and reinstall the pump assembly by reversing all the previous

In some models, you may not be able to separate the pump from the motor. In such
situations, you have to replace the entire pump assembly.
